Product Description
Offering an incredible feature set and exceptional quality for its price, Samsung’s fifth-generation 42-inch HP-S4253 plasma TV uses the company’s proprietary electronic chassis and the latest DNIe enhancement circuitry to deliver outstanding brightness, contrast, and image clarity. Use it for home theater and use it for your PC–it’s perfect for both. In addition to a standard-broadcast NTSC tuner, it also features an integrated ATSC tuner that can capture over-the-air digital broadcasts from local network affiliates (the set will still require a set-top tuner for receiving non-terrestrial HD broadcasts from channels like HBO or Discovery).

The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. Thanks to the new 13-bit processing capability of DNIe, the HP-S4253 can produce over 549 billion colors (compared to the one billion colors that TVs with 10-bit processing can produce.

This set features a 1024 x 768-pixel resolution, 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, 175-degree viewing angle, brightness rating of 1300 cd/m2 (candela per square meter), and an amazing 10000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV’s ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.

The anti-glare plasma panel offers several protective features to resist burn-in, including auto pixel shift, signal pattern processing, and white screen function. It’s rated for a 60,000-hour panel life (6 hours of usage a day for 27 years). Other features include:

  • Picture-in-picture (PIP) enables convenient simultaneous viewing of TV programs and video or PC sources.
  • Parental Control (V-Chip) helps parents monitor what their children watch on TV by establishing rating limits.
  • Auto volume leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.
  • Multi-lingual on-screen displays in English, Spanish or French.
  • Side A/V input

High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the sides of the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. It produces 10 watts of power per channel (for 20 watts total) and offers the following connection options:

  • Composite (RCA audio/video): 2 inputs (1 on the side)
  • S-Video: 2 inputs (1 on the side)
  • Component (Y/Pb/Pr): 2 inputs

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV–all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats–standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into ÒfocusÓ during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound. What’s in the Box

I just got my TV last Friday and it is everything that I have expected. Unlike the first reviewer on this site, I have not experienced the overheating issues (fingers crossed). If you read his review he did admit the TV was great until that started happening. I just hope I don’t get the same issue.

On to my review:
I spent over a year and a half researching flat panels. I came close to purchasing a Samsung 71F series, but when the salesman told me that new 2008 models were coming out in March, I decided to hold and do more research on those models. I almost purchased the 5 series, but when I found out that it does not have 120hz refresher rate, I decided to research the 6 series and ended buying the 46A650.

I briefly looked at the 7 series, but when I found out the only difference between the two was that the 7 series has a USB port for your MP3 player and 1 GB of cache, I figured it was not for me. I use a dock connected to my receiver when I play my MP3, so to me that was a useless function to fork over extra $$$ for. In addition, I have a PS3 so I don’t really need the 1GB of cache to use the TV as a multimedia center. If you don’t have a PS3 and plan to use your TV to view pictures and play music then the 7 series might be for you.

Pros:
I have the 46″ and I was amazed at how light it was. I was able to pick it up by myself and put it on the stand. The red is absolutely amazing. That’s the favorite thing my Fiancée likes about this TV. Personally, I like the red because it is very subtle and goes great with our family room.

The first night we got it we watched the movie Ratatouille on Blu-Ray Disc. Let me tell you after watching the movie my jaw was sore because I think I spent more than 3/4ths of the movie with my jaw open from the amazing picture. The picture was so clear and concise that we paused it and we were able to even see the little freckles on the mice throughout the movie, including the separate hairs.

As I said earlier I play video games with my PS3, so the 120 hz refresher rate was critical to have. MLB the Show 08 is insane. Just looking at the players faces and even the fans blew me away. My brother has a 46″ inch Vizio 1080P and he recommended it to me saying that there is not much difference from the two so I am better off saving. Let me tell you, he is absolutely wrong. I’ve watched his Vizio and to be honest, it can’t even hold the jockstrap of the 46A650 if it was a male. There is a big difference believe me. The only TV that could probably match-up to this one is the XBR Bravia with 120HZ. That would’ve been what I would have purchased if I had not gotten this one. Up until now, I have absolutely no regrets.

The reason I researched for over a year and a half is because I wanted to get a TV that if something new came on the market a few months later, I would not regret my purchase. I feel very strongly that I will not regret this purchase down the line.

I love having 4 HDMI inputs. This was very important for my purchase also, since I have separate HDMI components. The TV also has an ethernet port, so I have it plugged into the internet. I can get weather, news and stock quotes through it. I’ll admit, I haven’t used it much, but it’s nice to know, I can check the temperature at the touch of the button.

The blacks on this TV are awesome and I can have my curtain open on my huge family room window and I can see the tv clearly during the day. I love the TruSurround feature, since right now I only have two speakers and a subwoofer. This feature is meant to improve the sound quality for people who use two speaker systems. I plan to get a surround sound system eventually, but it’s going to be a while. That’s where this tool comes in handy

The screen is glossy, but I don’t have an issue with it. I like the glossy look and besides, it is meant to make the colors more vibrant and intense. I’ve played with the different viewing modes, but actually, I like standard the best. The movie mode is a little too dark for me and the game one is a little too bright. Standard mode is my desired preference.

The remote is oddly shaped and takes a while to get used to. It also has an ipod like scroll. Some people complain that it is an ugly remote. This is ridiculous; I’m sorry, but I did not purchase this TV for its remote. Anyway, I’m planning on upgrading to an RF Logitech remote this summer anyway.

Cons:

The TV is so good that on the tv stations with weak signals, you can see the weakness of the signal. On some you could see the lines and imperfections, due to having a weak signal. That is only a with a few channels. It’s a negative, but that’s what you get when the picture is very detailed; You will not only get the good qualities, but the bad also, if the signal is not strong. Regardless, that issue will be moot next year when the tv stations will be required to broadcast by digital signal.

Another issue is, that when you turn it on it takes about 3-4 seconds to pick up my digital cable signal from my DVR box. In addition when you switch between sources it takes around the same amount of time to pick up the signal. I’m impatient, which is a negative quality of mine. In our household, it seems like it is an issue only with me, since it does not bother my fiancee at all or any of our friends. Maybe it would not be a con if I was not so stupidly impatient.

Those are really the only two issues I have with the TV and to me they are very minor ones. I just pray I don’t start getting the issues, the first reviewer experienced.

Overall:

I am very happy with my purchase. I am very satisfied and do not feel guilty or have any regrets about making this purchase. Up until now, I feel this TV is worth every penny I paid for it. I’ll be updating my review as I learn more about this TV. I hope my review helped you, even if it was only a tad bit helpful, before making your investment on a flat panel television. Good luck with your search.

I’ve had this for a month now. I also bought the Samsung BD-P1500 with it. I love both units. I connected them to my Sony HT-CT100 soundbar and I am perfectly happy with the sound. Yes, I know the soundbar does not do HD sound,etc,.. but I don’t care because the soundbar is quite slick with the TV. Plus, it does what I want it to do so no complaint.

As for the TV. The picture is so crisp and clear and the black level really black that it took a while to get used to watching it. I have a DirecTV HD DVR attached to it too via HDMI and it is an entirely different level of watching TV. The images look so “real” as my daughter said.

I know the TV can do a lot of other things if you attach it to the internet. But, I bought it really for just watching HD TV and movies. So, I was/am not that concern about its other functions.

Right now, DirecTV just upgraded my DVR to 1080p, so I can’t wait to see any program or shows in 1080p. But the 1080i resolution is great as it is. So, no complaint in there either.

BTW, the upconversion from the BD-P1500 looks great too. Also, make sure you use HDMI 1.3b cables. I got mine here from BargainCell for < $10 each.

Samsung LN52A850 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV Reviews

I replaced a Vizio 42 inch LCD with this one. After 2 days of playing with it I can provide a few facts that may help the TV shopper with making a better decision.

Power consumption: I was unable to find the power rating for this set before it was delivered. Neither the specs on Amazon.com, nor the user manual that I downloaded from the Samsung web site, nor their support stuff were willing or able to give me this information. The response from Samsung support was, literally: “For the power supply and Power Consumption, refer to the label attached to the product.”
This made me a bit nervous at first. I measured the actual wattage today and it turns out that my concerns about unreasonable stand-by power consumption were unfounded. The stand-by power was not even detected by my simple wattmeter (i.e. it is close to or less than 1W, which is excellent).
The operating power consumption varies in a wide range, depending on the brightness, or back-light setting. When set to 3, the power consumption is about 220W. When turned up all the way to 10, the power goes up to almost 380W.

Sound: Terrible, to sum it up in one word. I just watched Coldplay on SNL and saw the guy hit the drums, but heard no bangs. The speakers have no bass reproduction. I played with the sound settings and the equalizer without any improvement. Moving the slider of the 100Hz band on the equalizer had no discernible result. Luckily, I have a very good AV receiver and a 7-1 speaker setup, so I don’t really care about the TV’s internal sound reproduction qualities. If you plan to watch TV without an AV receiver, DO NOT BUY THIS SET. You will be disappointed. The sound of the $700 Vizio TV that I am replacing was better by an order of magnitude. It is beyond me why such an expensive TV set has such poor sound. Design considerations, i.e. panel thickness, apparently played a role here, but the compromise was made on the wrong end. This is the main reason for the 4 stars. If sound was more important to me, I would give this set only 3 stars.

Picture: Wonderfully crisp and bright. The contrast is amazing. Black is black, even in a completely dark room.

Connectivity: plenty, nothing is missing.

Other Features: DLNA/UPnP/external and network media content: This TV set does not replace my Popcorn Hour media tank, unfortunately, which I was hoping for (it is a real power-hog unless I unplug it completely). The navigation becomes cumbersome quickly if you have more than just a handful of items in your content repository. Video playback is limited. I did not fully research the supported codecs, but gave up after I tried a few video files on my NAS and a majority did not play. The navigation issues apply to photo and music browsing as well. You only see 5 items at a time and browse through the list horizontally, one-by-one. When you open a directory with a larger number of files in it, the TV becomes unresponsive to the remote for several seconds. It did, however, find all my media sources without any setup on my part. It acquired an IP address on its own as soon as I plugged in a network cable and listed all the content sources on my network.
InfoLink: widgets for web content the overlay the TV screen are neat and let you read the news or weather forcast while the kids are watching a movie.
The built-in content features are neat for showing off the new TV to your friends, but I can’t see any other use for it.

The settings menu is confusing. Certain settings can be achieved in multiple ways, but you cannot always access every item in the settings. It not clear what the dependencies are (e.g why is the PIP menu item disabled when you watch TV. It is enabled when you watch an external source). There seem to be several layers of settings that have different priorities.

Another small annoyance is the PIP function. It is not available when you watch TV. You have to switch to another source, e.g. the HDMI input from the AV receiver, then turn PIP on and select a TV channel for the secondary picture window. These are a lot of unnecessary clicks.

Overall impression: A very nice TV with poor sound quality and some cool, but not very useful features for the technically advanced user. The network/internet integration is basic and a bit disappointing, based on the possibilities. There is hope though that new functionality will become available through firmware updates.

Samsung LN52A650 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV Reviews

December 11, 2008

By Scomel

I’ve had this TV since very early March. I’ve watched HD, SD and Blu-Ray and can not find a flaw. The 650 handles motion extremely well to where blurring and other artifacts are vitually non-existant. The AMP is a very cool feature that brings a realism to film making it seem more life-like, or as if it were originally shot on HD Video. Some have said this gives off a “soap opera” effect. I can see that description, but to me it makes film based DVD’s and movies look more like your watching a real-life play, viewing it through a window. It’s a very cool effect!

I understand people’s concern’s with the glossy screens found on plasma and some LCD’s. This screen is slightly less reflective than Samsung’s 71 series but can still be a problem for some. It would be nice if there was an easy solution for this but there’s not. Sony and other makers use a matte type of screen that certainly helps or eliminates the problem but introduces other negatives. I find colors and blacks just don’t “pop” on matte screens and tend to wash out more for off-angle viewing. The 650 has a picture with great depth and color from any angle, greatly adding to the immersion effect.

Much talk has been about the TOC bezel. I think Samsung has hit it out of the park with this. I absolutely love the red. I think it adds just a touch of class. It sets this tv apart from all others(though the picture quality already does this) while still being very subtle and retaining the ability to blend in with any decor. Most people who’ve come to my home do not even notice the red until I point it out. I’m a little tired of every set looking the same with either a piano black bezel or flat black. This is a very welcome change.

I like many other suffered the shut-off issue. As has been mentioned it appears Samsung has fixed the issue with a firmware update. I’ve updated the FW and so far so good. It was annoying but not a huge deal to me. Samsung should be commended for how quickly they addressed the issue. I received several calls from upper level officials that were very concerned with my problem. I’ve never had this level of service from any other manufacturer. Well done Samsung! A side effect of the FW update is that the AMP processing received a boost. Before the FW update I usually had AMP on low at all times and would occasionally put it on High. Now, I still use it at the low setting most times but will put it on Medium occasionaly, and find the High setting a bit much for me. I can put it on High without most of the annoying artifacts people have desribed the 71 series has, which is nice, nut the actual effect is bit much for me.

Overall, this is best the LCD on the market. I can’t see Sony or any of the other manufactures making a better TV this year. They may match it perhaps, but certainly won’t surpass it. For those that were on the fence waiting to buy until the shut-off issue was fixed, your wait is over. Buy with complete confidence and enjoy one of the best TV’s out there!

Car Accessories

May 17, 2008

Adding car accessories and auto parts to the outside and inside of your vehicle can make the ultimate difference between a good, fancy or luxurious looking car and a dull and boring automobile that is hardly noticed by anyone.

Exterior auto accessories

You don’t have to add many accessories to the exterior of your vehicle to change it’s character totally. If you have an old car, you can quickly turn it into a new one. Even a new, standard looking automobile can be turned into a monster ride with a little exterior makeover. And that’s the really nice thing with exterior auto accessories; with the selection of styles of exterior car parts we have today, you can give a car a makeover by doing virtually anything you want, just by adding anything from a hardly visible exterior element to a radical change of style.

Car spoilers are fairly easy to install and fairly cheap as well. Auto spoilers come in a lot of different styles. A spoiler can improve your vehicle’s performance, give it an individual appearance and can even increase your car’s resale value. A car body kit can be pretty difficult to install, and requires special knowledge and tools. Car wings can be really striking, and come in many different styles, from standard factory style models to Formula-1 inspired speed monster looking. They are easy to install and not so expensive either.

Be aware that installing many exterior vehicle accessories will require some specialized tools and equipment as well as good knowledge in how to install it. The exterior car parts must also be of good quality. Whichever part in question, if you do the installation of high quality exterior auto accessories properly, you can make your automobile stand out from the crowd of vehicles on the roads.

Interior motorcar accessories

The car exterior is one thing but the fact is that you spend most of your time within your vehicle. Why not make the interior an enjoyable place to sit, especially if you drive much. There are many items to consider adding to your car’s interior for example, steering wheels, read outs, gauges, shifters, lighting and more. Most interior car components are easy to install compared to exterior accessories. .

It is very convenient to have tachometers and speedometers that are easy to read, especially if you are driving a lot on freeways and highways. High quality equipment that enable you to get important critical information within short a time is essential for driving comfort and security. You can enhance the drivability of your car with the proper interior vehicle accessories. Just think of what the quailty of racing pedals and shifters can do for your safety by enable you to change gears more rapidly. This can be critical in situations where you have to adjust the speed rapidly and repeatedly as the case may require on roads with high traffic.

Care of Your Car Exterior and Interior

May 17, 2008

Well you own a car and you want it to look good. You should because you probably paid a lot of money for it, probably so much in fact you could rent a limo to get to work and it would be cheaper. Anyway this article is going to talk about car care focusing on the exterior and interior. It’s not hard to keep your car looking great and it should cost you a lot of money. The key is to do a through job and do it on a regular basis.

First we will focus on the interior of the car. Most cars you see have carpets that are filthy especially the driver’s footboard area. What do you do to fix the problem? Likely there are many months or years of dirt ground into that carpet. A solution to get them back in shape is the good old vacuum. Having a carpet brush handy and some warm water and carpet cleaner will help too! Give your car a good vacuum! This will take any large debris and sand off of the surface. Then take the brush (dry without anything on it) and brush the carpet. You will find this loosens the dirt and sand and brings it to the top. Vacuum again! No use shampooing your carpets until you get most of the dirt and sand out otherwise you will just be rubbing it back into the carpet. Once you are satisfied that most of the debris is gone take a brush and dip it into the warm water, not sopping wet but enough to get the bristles wet. Then go over your carpet like you did when it was dry. Once this is complete take a wet dry vac and suck out any moisture and dirt from the carpet. You may want to add a bit of freshener to the water before you begin to give the carpet a nice scent when it dries. You can also add a freshener later after it dries if you wish.

Windows this can be a tough job. Be aware of products you like or have tested. Many of the cheaper window cleaners have a lot of water in them and leave streaks or dry spotted or just don’t clean very well. Use a separate cloth for cleaning and one for drying it will make for a cleaner window and shine. Cigarette smoke sticks to windows like glue so you may have to clean the couple of times if you smoke in your car. Another tip if you are a smoker is to put some baking soda in the bottom of your ashtray to absorb the smell, it will never totally get rid of the smell but it will help.
